Helping Parents to Lead
Parent Leadership is the cornerstone
of our organization. We educate parents so that they will have the
knowledge and skills they need to improve
the
community
for
children.
The Parent Leadership Training Institute
(PLTI) is a 20-week course offered once each year. PLTI focuses on
developing the personal skills parents need to lead in the community,
and educating parents on politics, policy, and the media. The
curriculum was developed by the Connecticut Commission on Children.
People Empowering People (PEP) is a
15-week program offered in Spanish and Portuguese. It focuses on
communications, problem solving, parenting, community issues, and
civics. The curriculum was developed by the the UConn Cooperative
Extension
System.
Advocating for
Children
Advocating
for
children
and
families is a high priority for Danbury Children First
and the parents involved in our work. We focus on:
- ensuring that all children have access
to high-quality preschool experiences.
- opening the doors for all
parents to be involved in their children's education and fostering a
greater understanding of the importance of parent involvement in our
education.
- promoting an understanding of different
cultures within the Danbury community to improve children's educational
and health outcomes.
Informing Parents
Danbury Children First provides the
information parents in Greater Danbury need to raise happy, healthy,
successful children.
Our Parent to Parent Newsletter
and e-newsletter connect
parents with local resources, keep parents informed about community
events, and provide insights on raising children.
One-page Resource Sheets offer
at-a-glance information on Danbury-area resources for health, human
services, education, and raising children with special needs.
Most information is
provided in three languages, English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
Workshops,
which are often done in partnership with the Danbury Public Schools and
the Danbury School Readiness Council focus on:
- parent involvement in education
- high-quality early care and
education
- early literacy
